Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, 150 Years in the Making

The region extends from the Adriatic Sea east almost across the peninsula between the Po River north and the Ligurian and Tuscan Apennines west and south. Bologna is the chief city and regional capital. The northern portion of Emilia-Romagna is a great plain extending from the Po River southeast to Ravenna and Rimini, where the Apennine Mountains come down to the Adriatic coast.

Immediately to the southwest of the ancient Roman road called the Via Aemilia, the mountains begin to rise, culminating in the central chain of the Apennines. The name Emilia comes from the Via Aemiliaa Roman road that traversed the region from Ariminium Rimini in the southeast to Placentia Piacenza in the northwest; a modern railway closely follows its route.

In popular usage the name was transferred to the area which formed the eighth Augustan region of Italy as early as the 1st century adand it was frequently named as a district under imperial judges. After the 3rd century, Ravenna was, as a rule, not treated as part of Aemilia, the chief town of which was Placentia. In the 6th century, Ravenna became the seat of a Byzantine exarchate. After the Lombards had for two centuries attempted to subdue the maritime pentapolis Rimini, Ancona, Fano, Pesaro, and Senigalliathe Frankish king Pippin III took these five cities from the Lombard ruler Aistulf and in gave them to the papacy, to which, under the name of Romagna, they continued to belong.

Whether belonging to the Romagna or not, each had a history of its own, and, notwithstanding the feuds of the Guelfs and Ghibellines papal and imperial factionsthey prospered considerably.

Papal supremacy in the Romagna remained little more than nominal until Cesare Borgiathe natural son of Pope Alexander VIcrushed most of the petty princes there, and the Romagna came under papal administration after the death of Alexander in The papacy also controlled Ferrara and Bologna after the 16th century, while the rest of the region was largely dominated by the Este duchy of Modena and the Farnese duchy of Parma and Piacenza.

After a period of Napoleonic domination, the Congress of Vienna returned Romagna to the papacy and gave the duchy of Parma to Marie Louise, wife of the deposed Napoleon, and Modena to the archduke Francis of Austria, the heir of the last Este.

After a period of continuous unrest and numerous attempts at revolt, Emilia passed to the Italian kingdom almost without resistance in The name of the region was changed to Emilia-Romagna in With its broad lowland and adequate water supply from both rainfall and irrigationEmilia-Romagna is one of the leading agricultural regions of Italy. Wheat, corn maizefodder, and sugar beets are the principal crops; vegetables and fruits are also grown in the lowlands and grapes on the Apennine slopes.

Livestock raising and dairy farming are extensive, and the region has a large food-processing and food-packing industry. The manufacture of cars and trucks, farm machinerychemicals and pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and clothing is important. Small hydroelectric stations on the rivers provide power, and these are connected with the Alpine plants so that interchange at different seasons is possible.

The discovery of large deposits of natural gas at Cortemaggiore north of Fidenza and near Ravenna and of oil at Busseto near Cortemaggiore gives the region a vital role in the energy economy of Italy.

It is a wonderful institution that has helped over thousands of people since it started in The signature red variety from the area is Sangiovese di Romagna. It is similar to its Tuscan cousin but is unique as well.

I find it rounded and softer than the Sangiovese from Tuscany, on the whole, often with less acidity because of the warmer soils, more clay based soils with lots of limestone and organic materials in them. This particular wine ages for a short period of time in tonneau but not new oak. It has a relatively high alcohol content, A seasoned Parimigiano Reggiano or a nice plate of salumi could do the trick for summer though. The designation was created in I like this wine and I like to support the projects that San Patrignano undertakes.

I think it is a good value for the price albeit not inexpensive.

All of his wines I find to be very polished, the opposite of rustic, these were no different. If you are a wine lover and want to learn more about Sangiovese, please join us following ItalianFWT.

San Patrignano sounds like a wonderful organization, I love that you chose a wine from there, and I appreciate you helping us to see a Sangiovese from outside Tuscany!

Cool…I used to go to Lido delle Nazioni sometimes too…and Lido Estense when living for a couple of years in Bologna… the house of Anita Garibaldi is close by there too. San Patrignano sounds like such an amazing institution. Thanks for sharing about it and your experience in the region. How wonderful that Italy has such a special place doing special things. Was interesting to learn about it. Thanks for the education. Hi Martin — Thanks for reading.

I took it to mean grapes from the Caucasus Mountains — Georgia and that area. Like Saperavi and others, that was my assumption.

To that end I am always on the look out for regions about which I know nothing, or little and grape varieties that I have never tried before. Well, the other day I tried a dry white wine that ticked both those boxes and was really good.

I enjoyed it very much and it was very, very drinkable. Anyway, the wine I drank came from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, from DO Romagna and was made from the Pagadebit grape, of which I had never heard and rather surprisingly it was so good that I made it my Wine of the Week.

Wine map of Northern Italy. Emilia-Romagna is in the South East. Click for a larger view. Pagadebit is the name in Emilia-Romagna for the Bombino Bianco grape. The estate at Poderi dal Nespoli which is a family run winery that was founded in The aromas are floral, light honey, apple and herbs.

The palate is a lovely combination of ripe, but crisp fruit and savoury herbal flavours. Tangy, crisp apple, light peach and a burst of fresh lemony citrus and tangerine vie with the savoury, almond and herbal notes and the merest hint of something saline. This is not a hugely complex wine, but it is really very drinkable, utterly delicious and incredibly versatile.

Perhaps the addition of Sauvignon adds little finesse here. Enjoy it without food or with any lighter dishes, especially seafood and chicken. I particularly like recommending this wine because it is mainly made from a grape that almost no one has a good word for.
